SACRAMENTO — California Governor Gavin Newsom has tested positive for COVID-19 following a personal trip to Baja California, a spokesperson for his office said.
“Today, the governor tested positive for COVID-19 after exhibiting mild symptoms,” Deputy Director of Communications Alex Stack said in a statement late Wednesday.
Newsom will work remotely and self-isolate in accordance with guidance from the California Department of Public Health, Stack said. On Thursday, the governor is expected to attend a virtual press conference with Attorney General Rob Bonta and other state leaders to make a “big announcement.”
First partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom tested negative for COVID-19, Stack said.
The governor’s positive test follows an in-person trip to Baja last week, as first reported by the Sacramento Bee. After returning to the state on Sunday, Newsom met with emergency response officials and received an update on winter storms as well as the state’s work to support disaster response and relief efforts, according to Stack.
The governor previously tested positive for COVID-19 in May 2022. He was vaccinated at the time and had received two booster shots, according to his press office.
