in the too early hours of January 24, the nominations for the 95the annual academy awards they were announced. Actors Riz Ahmed (metal sound) Y allison williams (Salt) did the honours. Sadly, they weren’t joined in the festivities by Williams’ deadly singing robot co-star. M3GANthough she was surely there in spirit.
With a quartet of blockbuster movies in contention: Top Gun: Maverick, avatar: the path of water, black panther: wakanda forever, as well as Elvis – this years oscar had a golden opportunity to expand its global audience beyond the record audience of 10.5 million in 2021. So, did the Academy take advantage? Or he threw away a 2009, where he failed to nominate The dark knight Y wall-e for Best Picture, prompting rule changes and a lot of concerns?
The fiercely original left-field hit from directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything everywhere at once, leading all films with 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for michelle yeohwho made history as the first openly Asian nominee in the category (Merle Oberon was nominated in 1936 for the dark angelbut hid his Asian ancestry). Netflixwar drama in german All calm on the west front, for its part, it surprises with nine Oscar nominations, one of which is Best Picture. The Academy loves war movies, right? Among the other delicious surprises are Angela Bassett receiving a well-deserved Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in black panther: wakanda forever, Brian Tyree Henry earned his first Oscar nomination, for Best Supporting Actor, for the little-promoted raised causeway, and Paul Mescal earning his first Oscar nomination, for Best Actor, as a tortured young father in After the sun.
Unlike last year, the Academy did a good job of nominating a wide range of artists in most categories, though it did not nominate two of the top black contenders, Danielle Deadwyler (until) Y Viola Davis (the king woman), in Best Actress, and did not award a single woman in Best Director.
These were the five biggest slights to come out of this year’s Oscar nominations.
Time Top Gun: Maverick received six Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture and a surprise nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, The Man Who Makes Everything Run Smoothly failed to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Cruise is not only the biggest movie star in the world, and maybe even the last true one, but he also has a history of getting screwed over by the Academy. He has never won an Oscar for acting, despite deserving victories for Jerry Maguire Y Magnolia, and hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar in over two decades. He only has three acting nominations in his entire career (the two films mentioned, plus born on the fourth of july). Have Cruise’s Scientology antics put him in conflict with the Academy? They certainly haven’t helped.
Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis
This year’s Oscars have the unfortunate distinction of honoring zero black actors in the Best Actress and Best Actor categories, despite several creditable performances. The omissions are most glaring in Best Actress, where a pair of powerful turns were expected to gain recognition: Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till, the mother of murdered 14-year-old Emmett Till in Until, and the transformation of Viola Davis into the warrior General Nanisca, of the Agojie, in The King Woman. Both Deadwyler and Davis were active during the campaign period, but neither received the nod. Deadwyler’s snub is perhaps the most shocking, given the gravity of the role and how he rose to the occasion.
Yes, another year has passed in which no women are nominated for Best Director. He hoped that Charlotte Wells would be recognized for her artfully understated direction of After the sun, a heartbreaking and personal story of a distraught young father (Mescal) and his 11-year-old daughter (Frankie Corio) who spend one last summer vacation together in Turkey, but it didn’t come to be. Instead, Ruben Östlund received a nomination for sadness triangle, in this writer’s opinion, one of the most ostentatious and narratively hackneyed films of the past year. Perhaps Greta Gerwig will help correct these errors with this summer’s campaign. Barbie.
dolly de leon
Speaking of sadness triangle, The film has one saving grace: Dolly de Leon, who received BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for her inspired role as Abigail, a cleaner who becomes a tribal leader of sorts after a luxury yacht fills up with some of the worst one percent. I have ever seen shipwrecks and the survivors find themselves stranded on a remote island. Thanks to her keen survival skills, de Leon turns the tables on these spoiled cowards, living in his own private abode inside the lifeboat and wheedling Carl (Harris Dickinson), an insecure male role model, in exchange for special privileges. . It would have been wonderful to see de Leon, a veteran Filipino stage and screen actress, be recognized by the Academy for her tremendous effort.
Despite a two-decade career of outstanding performances, including in such celebrated films as little Miss Sunshine, there will be blood Y prisoners, Dano has yet to receive a single Oscar nomination. The idea was that he would do it for his cute role as Burt Fabelman, the stern but sweet computer engineer father of Sammy Fabelman in Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical. The Fabelmans, But it was not to be. It’s a shame, given that some of the film’s more operatic performances are recognizable while the film’s powerful and understated one is not, along with Dano’s breakout year between him and his Riddler in the batman. On the other hand, Dano was also cruelly snubbed for fully embodying Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys in love and mercy, which should have gotten him every nomination under the sun.
