DirecTV drops Trump favorite Newsmax

DirecTV has ditched the pro-Trump far-right news channel Newsmax.

The network stopped being served by the platform at 23:59 on Tuesday, the platform having stated that the transport fees required by Newsmax to supplement advertising would have entailed higher costs that would have to be passed on to customers.

Newsmax disputes this by saying the claim is false and they were “deplatformed” by DirecTV like the conservative channel One America News was in 2022.

Texas Republican Representative Wesley Hunt took up the fight on behalf of the network, sending a letter of protest to the CEOs of DirecTV and parent company AT&T, co-signed by several Republican lawmakers, including Matt Gaetz, James Comer and Lauren Boebert.

Newsmax is still available to stream online and through several other platforms including Amazon, Roku and Google Play. The network refers to DirecTV’s move as “censorship.”

DirecTV says it wants to continue offering the network on its platform.
