Des Moines students killed in shooting at Iowa outreach center

Des Moines police officers are at the scene of a shooting on Monday that killed two students and wounded a staff member. The shooting was reported around 12:53 pm on Starts Right Here, a non-profit organization focused on helping at-risk youth. Starts Right Here was created by activist and rapper Will Keeps. The extension center is located at 455 Southwest 5th St. Starts Right Here has partnered with Des Moines Public Schools since 2021. They serve between 40-50 DMPS students at a time. No DMPS personnel were on site at the time of the shooting. Police say three people were shot. Two students were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. They already died. A third person, an employee of the Start Well Here, was transported in serious condition to the hospital. They were taken into surgery. The ages of the students are unknown at this time. Police say approximately 20 minutes after the shooting, three suspects were arrested after a traffic stop. Two suspects remained in the vehicle, while a third suspect fled on foot and was arrested. Police have not released the identity of the suspects. No charges have yet been filed. The DMPD is due to give an update on the Monday night shooting at 9:00 pm. Kim Reynolds released the following statement following the shooting: “I am shocked and saddened to learn of the shooting at Starts Right Here. I’ve seen firsthand how hard Will Keeps and his team work to help at-risk children through this alternative education program. My heart breaks for them, these children and their families. Kevin and I are praying for his safe recovery.” The Des Moines Public Schools released the following statement after the shooting: “We are saddened to learn of another act of gun violence, especially one affecting an organization that works closely with some of our students. We are still waiting to hear more details, but our thoughts are with all the victims of this incident and their families and friends.
