Thursday night, friends of the Pugh family relayed Ashley’s next update on Gracie and Jayleigh.

“The girls are currently stable, but both have a long road to recovery ahead of them. Gracie, 12, when she originally arrived in Nanticoke [hospital], she couldn’t feel anything from the waist down. She was diagnosed with an L2 dislocation and a L3 and L4 fracture in her back with spinal cord compression. After Nanticoke stabilized her, she was transferred to another hospital and she felt her thighs again, but nothing below her knee. She was taken straight into an MRI and surgery Wednesday morning around 3 am The doctor was able to relieve the compression on the spinal cord and the surgery went as smoothly as expected. When you have spinal cord trauma, it’s a waiting game. With the swelling and trauma, you have to wait. She still has feeling in her thighs, but she hasn’t moved yet. Gracie had tingling feet from time to time today. Her progress will be day by day for the next few months. She is pretty bruised, but no other injuries have been diagnosed at this time.

“Jayleigh was diagnosed with an open fracture of the tibia and fibula in Nanticoke where she underwent surgery. She was placed in an external fixator and sent back to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a C7 neck fracture and was placed in an orthosis to neck, which he will be in for six weeks. He also has a L3 and L4 fracture in his back, which can be managed with a back brace for about 12 weeks. He has a right clavicle fracture from the seat belt, as well as a broken rib on the right side. He has a small left pneumothorax, which is the air between the lung and the chest wall, not inside the lung. They’re just monitoring it as it’s not big enough for intervention at this point, so which is a blessing. Today they diagnosed him with intestinal perforation with free fluid in the abdomen, he had internal bleeding in the stomach area, they knew it and they were seeing it and today they were able to locate it and find out where she was she That surgery went great, that got there and I controlled the bleeding and got her back. She went into surgery for that today. She did a bowel resection, which means they took out quite a bit, nothing that would have any long-term effects. While she was there, the orthopedics decided to do another leg wash and manipulate her bones to improve her alignment. She still has the external fixator in place and a nasogastric tube was placed through her nose to decompress her stomach. She will be taken out tomorrow and this will allow her to eat.”

Both girls were said to be in a lot of pain and hoped they would get a good night’s sleep. Family friends asked for continued prayers for the Pugh family. Ashley thanked everyone who prayed, supported, donated or helped in any way.
