EVANSVILLE – Evansville police say a former employee opened fire inside the West Side Walmart on Thursday night, injuring at least one person before being killed by officers.
EPD spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Gray identified the shooter on Friday morning as 25-year-old Ronald Ray Mosley II. He previously worked for Walmart.
The victim was a current employee, Officer Taylor Merriss said during a location update on Friday. She did not release the victim’s name and did not know his current status, but said she believed the victim “was able to speak when she was removed from the scene”.
The EPD will hold a press conference later this Friday.
Emergency dispatchers received a call about the shooter at 9:59 pm on Thursday. Seven EPD officers and a Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the scene and entered the store immediately to find the shooter.
“There were several officers looking for the offender,” Merriss said. “And he could turn the corner at any time.”
The shooting spread to several areas of the store as customers and employees tried to hide or flee. Merriss described the bodycam footage as “weird”.
“He would shoot officers and move around,” Gray said.
The firefight lasted about 15 minutes, Merriss said. According to the police-reviewed body camera, Mosley tried to leave the store but was met at the door by officers. He went back inside and was eventually killed by law enforcement.
The department said there could be up to 50 witnesses. Dozens of officers from the Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police were on the scene Thursday night, with ambulances also parked in front of the store.
“A lot of people were running away,” Gray said. “We ask that any witnesses call if they have information.”
The store is located at 335 S. Red Bank Road, just south of the intersection of Lloyd Expressway and Red Bank Road.
This is breaking news and will be updated.
