Can Tom Cruise use his maverick magic to save Tár from box office oblivion? | Films

EITHERObviously we all know that something is very wrong in the world of cinema shown in theaters. But no film has illuminated this issue as much as Tár, a film with a seemingly unstoppable critical buzz that Oscar glory seems almost certain, but it’s hardly been seen by anyone. So far, worldwide, fewer people have seen Tár than Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile in its first two days of release. And Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile wasn’t exactly a huge hit, either.

All that could be about to change, though, because Tár director Todd Field has just found a fail-safe advertising strategy. That’s right, he’s crediting tom cruise with a lot of his success.

In a recent New Yorker interview, Field mentions Cruise twice. The first instance comes when she talks about Eyes Wide Shut, in which she got a small role. According to the interview, Field treated the shoot as a sort of director’s boot camp, shadowing Stanley Kubrick and asking him technical questions. And this caught the attention of Tom Cruise. Cruise invited Field to dinner and told him, “You’re going to make movies.” Field deferred, mentioning a short story he probably wouldn’t win the rights to, and Cruise responded: “You’re just making excuses. figure it out.He did so, and thus began his career as a director.

Even better than that though, Field also revealed that Cruise went to great lengths to protect his 2001 film In the Bedroom from the clutches of Harvey Weinstein. The story goes like this: Miramax bought In the Bedroom and then, as was Weinstein’s custom, butchered it in post-production. Upset by Weinstein’s brutality, Field called Cruise. And Cruise provided a long game systematic plan to save the movie.

“He basically said, ‘This is how you’re going to play it. It’ll take you six months and you’ll beat it, but you have to do exactly what I’m going to tell you to do, step by step,’” Field says of Cruise. The plan, in short, was to let Harvey Weinstein edit the movie as much as he wanted, then wait for it to go bad, as it almost certainly would, before reminding him of all the good reviews he had received in its original form. The plan worked, and In the Bedroom profited and received a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars the following year.

So, to anyone keeping score, Tom Cruise is the man who persuaded Todd Field to put aside his fear and find his destiny as a film director. And Tom Cruise is the man who made sure Todd Field became a critical darling, instead of just another nameless director crushed under the wheels of Harvey Weinstein’s grotesque egomania. And now, simply by including his name in his ad campaign, Tom Cruise could be the man to help Todd Field put Tár on the seemingly insurmountable path to recoup his production budget.

This not only makes Tom Cruise sound like a good guy and a powerful industry ally, but it also sets up the glaring possibility that Cruise simply exists to help Todd Field out of trouble. Maybe the next time Todd Field stumbles on the way home from the grocery store and drops fruit on a busy street, Tom Cruise will appear out of nowhere and avoid getting hit by all the surrounding traffic. Or, perhaps, if Tár somehow doesn’t win any Oscars this year, Tom Cruise will parachute through the roof as Batman and physically change the winner’s name on the envelope with nothing more than the power of his mind. Because, as we’re all finding out, that’s the kind of person Tom Cruise is.
