LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KABC) — A Riverside County deputy sheriff died after being shot at Lake Elsinore on Friday afternoon.
“We are devastated to announce the death of Representative Darnell Calhoun, who was killed in the line of duty this afternoon,” the department announced on Twitter.
The deputy was shot and rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for surgery, initially listed as “serious condition”. Shortly before 8 pm, officials confirmed that the deputy had died.
The shooting suspect was in custody and was also transported to the same hospital.
The incident was reported on Friday afternoon in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane.
The suspect and the officer were rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar.
Dozens of police vehicles were appearing outside the hospital.
There was also a large police presence at the home in the Lakeland Village neighborhood where the incident took place.
No further details were immediately released.
The incident came just over two weeks after another Riverside County deputy, Isaiah Cordero, was shot and killed in a violent encounter with a criminal who had a long record. The shooter in that incident was shot and killed by deputies after a chase.
