The voice actor and entertainer was charged with two felonies stemming from a 2020 incident involving the victim of a Jane Doe
Justin Roiland, the co-creator and lead voice actor of the hit animated series rick and mortyhe faces felony charges of domestic violence stemming from a 2020 incident.
nbc news reports that Roiland was arrested and charged with felony domestic battery with bodily harm and felony false imprisonment for threat, violence, fraud and/or deception after the incident, involving a Jane Doe victim he was dating at that moment .
Roiland has pleaded not guilty to both charges, and the criminal complaint, arrest affidavit and subsequent legal hearings remain sealed. nbc news reported on the criminal case against Roiland after he appeared Thursday at a pretrial hearing in Orange County, California. No trial date has yet been set, but Roiland was ordered to attend another pre-trial hearing on April 27.
The incident reportedly occurred in January 2020 and Roiland was charged in May 2020. He was arrested and released on $50,000 bail in August of that year and was arraigned in October 2020. That same month, he was filed a protective order against Roiland prohibiting him from contacting or coming within 100 feet of the Jane Doe victim; that protection order remains in effect until October 2023.
According to nbc newsRoiland’s lawyers told the court that they offered him a plea deal. The news of the charges against Roiland comes just days after a new animated series he is executive producing, koala mandebuted on Hulu.
Roiland and Dan Harmon co-created rick and morty in 2013, and over the decade that followed, the series became a billion-dollar franchise. In 2018, after allegations of misconduct were leveled against Harmon during his time working at Communityhe admitted to sexually harassing a former writer on the show, Megan Ganz. The situation led to his ultimately being fired from the cult NBC sitcom.
